Thomas Pomplin

Thomas Pomplin (1826-5 August 1854) was an African-American firefighter and the first line-of-duty death in Rockland County. Born in Piermont, New York, he joined the Empire Hose Company No. 1 of the Piermont Fire Department. He was injured while fighting a fire at the Storms Cedar Tub & Pail Factory in Nyack and succumbed to his injuries a few days later, but his sacrifice went under-remembered until the community unveiled a monument in his honor on 5 August 2022.
