Thomas Mitchell (11 July 1892-17 December 1962) was an American actor. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to a family of Irish-American journalist and civic leaders (he was the uncle of Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell), he became an actor in 1913 and went on to appear in 49 films, 43 of which were made from 1936 to 1946, including Gone with the Wind, High Noon, and It's a Wonderful Life. Mitchell, a Republican, supported Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1952 presidential bid, and he died in 1962.
