Thomas Meagher (1796-1874) was the Repeal Association MP for Waterford from 1847 to 1857, succeeding Thomas Wyse and preceding John Aloysius Blake.
Biography[]
Thomas Meagher was born in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1796, the son of an Irish immigrant merchant from Tipperary. He returned to Ireland in his late twenties to represent his father's business interests, and he served as Mayor of Waterford from 1843 to 1844, the first Catholic mayor of the city since the Penal Laws. He went on to serve as MP for Waterford from 1847 to 1857, and he died in 1874. His son Thomas Francis Meagher became a Young Irelander, Union general, and Governor of Montana, and the elder Thomas Meagher outlived all but one of his children.
