Thomas Haughey

Thomas Haughey (1826-5 August 1869) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-AL 6) from 21 July 1868 to 3 March 1869, succeeding Williamson Robert Winfield Cobb and preceding William Crawford Sherrod.

Biography[]

Thomas Haughey was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1826, and he and his father emigrated to the United States via New York City. He moved to Jefferson County, Alabama in 1841, becoming a teacher and surgeon in Elyton. He was sympathetic to the Union and the plight of the slaves during the American Civil War, and, after the war, he resumed his practice in Decatur. Haughey served in the US House of Representatives from 1868 to 1869 as a Republican, and he then sought re-election as an independent Republican. In the ensuing race, insults and accusations were thrown between the three candidates vying for power, and Haughey was shot in the stomach after an argument with a supporter of his Republican opponent. He died five days later.
