Thomas Stanhope Flournoy (15 December 1811-12 March 1883) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-VA 3) from 4 March 1847 to 3 March 1849, succeeding William Treadway and preceding Thomas H. Averett.
Biography[]
Thomas Stanhope Flournoy was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1811, and he became a lawyer in Halifax, Virginia in 1834. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1847 as a Whig, and he was the Know Nothings' unsuccessful 1855 gubernatorial candidate. He later became colonel of the 6th Virginia Cavalry in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, fighting in the Valley Campaign. Flournoy launched a failed 1863 gubernatorial campaign, and, after the war, he was a delegate to the 1876 Democratic National Convention. He died in 1883.
