Thomas Bowles Shannon

Thomas Bowles Shannon (21 September 1827-21 February 1897) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-CA) from 4 March 1863 to 3 March 1865, succeeding Frederick Low.

Biography[]

Thomas Bowles Shannon was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1827, and he moved to Illinois in 1844 and went to California in 1849 during the Gold Rush. He engaged in mining and mercantile pursuits in Plumas County, and he entered politics as a Whig before joining the Free Soiler wing of the Democratic Party and then the Republican Party. He served in the State Assembly from 1859 to 1860 and in 1862, and he served in the US House of Representatives from 1863 to 1865. He served as surveyor of the port of San Francisco from 1865 to 1869, in the State Assembly from 1871 to 1872, as Collector of Customs at San Francisco from 1872 to 1880, and he died in 1897.
