Thetford Forest is the largest lowland pine forest in Britain, covering 47,000 acres in northern Suffolk and southern Norfolk, England. The forest was created in 1922 as a strategic reserve of timber in the event of another world war, and, during World War II, a shortage of male laborers (most of whom had joined the British Army) led to the employment of a significant number of women in the forest.
