The Thermidorians were a classical liberal French political group that was active during the French Revolution. Named for the "Thermidorian Reaction" of 27 July 1794, the Thermidorians were a group of anti-radical politicians led by Paul Barras, and they overthrew the radical Jacobin Club and had Maximilien Robespierre and its other leaders guillotined. The Thermidorians formed a new majority in the National Convention, and they dissolved the convention with the Constitution of the Year III, forming the new Council of Five Hundred under the French Directory. In 1799, the Thermidorians were overthrown by the Bonapartists in the Coup of 18 Brumaire, and the Thermidorians and other political factions ceased to exist after Napoleon Bonaparte's coup.
