Theodoric II

Theodoric II (17 July 434-21 July 466) was King of the Visigoths from 3 December 453 to 21 July 466, succeeding Thorismund and preceding Euric.

Biography[]

Theodoric was born in 434, the son of Thorismund and the brother of Thorismund II. He had his brother murdered in 453 and usurped the Visigothic throne from him, and, in 458, the Western Roman emperor Majorian invaded Gallia Narbonensis with the goal of ousting Theodoric II from power there. Majorian defeated Theodoric at the Battle of Arelate, forcing the Visigoths to retreat to Gallia Aquitania. The Visigoths were forced to relinquish their conquests in Hispania and return to foederati status, and Theodoric was murdered by his brother Euric in 466.
