Theobald Walter, 1st Chief Butler of Ireland

Theobald Walter, 1st Chief Butler of Ireland (1165-1206) was Chief Butler of Ireland from 1185 to 1206, preceding Theobald le Botiller, 2nd Chief Butler of Ireland.

Biography[]

Theobald Walter was born in Norfolk, England in 1165, and he was raised by Chief Justiciar Ranulf de Glanvill. In 1185, Prince John of England landed at Waterford in southern Ireland and decided to make Theobald the hereditary Butler of England, granting him control of northeastern Thomond. In 1200, John deprived him of all of his offices due to his unpopular rule in Ireland. He died in County Wicklow in 1206.
