Texas is one of the fifty states of the United States, located in the south of the country. Texas is located on the Rio Grande border with Mexico, and it was formerly a republic from 1836 to 1845 after gaining independence from the Mexicans in the Texas Revolution. Texas would be admitted to the union on 29 December 1845, leading to the Mexican-American War, which added more lands to the state. Texas was one of the member states of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, and the state entered a period of economic stagnation after the war's end. Eventually, cattle ranching became the dominant industry in the state, with the image of the cowboy being associated with Texas. In 2015, the state had a population of 27,469,114 people, with its capital being Austin and Houston being the most populous city.
