Biography[]
Teruworq was born in 1072 to the Sunni Muslim Ethiopian House of Makhzumi, and he was the son of Maya'ir Makhzumi. Teruworq became a ward of King Dawit II of Axum after the fall of the County of Assab in 1077, and Dawit gave him a happy upbringing. On 18 August 1081, after he punched the cook's son in the face again due to a temper tantrum, Dawit encouraged him to be more patient, and he succeeded. On 8 September 1082 Dawit caught him tortuting a rat behind the stables, so he talked to him about kindness, and he began to treat everyone nicely. In 1084, he became a noble when his father became the Duke of Shewa after Dawit seized the region from the Zagwe dynasty. On 18 March 1088, he was discovered to be hardly eating anything out of fear of turning fat, and King Dawit told him that temperance was a virtue. On 30 March 1088 he became betrothed to the king's eldest daughter Falashina Gideon, and on 4 May 1088 he was made Mayor of Gondar. On 21 July 1088, he became mature, and he formally married Falashina.
