Terence MacManus

Terence MacManus (1811-15 January 1861) was a Young Irelander revolutionary during the mid-19th century.

Biography[]

Terence MacManus was born in Tempo, County Fermanagh, Ireland in 1811, and he became a successful shipping agent in Liverpool, England before returning to Ireland in 1848 and joining the Repeal Association. He later joined the Young Irelander Irish Confederation, and he took part in the failed Young Irelander Rebellion. He was initially sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to deportation to Australia for life. In 1852, MacManus and Thomas Francis Meagher escaped to the United States, and MacManus settled in San Francisco, California. He failed to re-establish his shipping agent career, and he died in poverty in 1861 at the age of 50.
