Teodosio II, Duke of Braganza (28 April 1568-29 November 1630) was the Duke of Braganza from 1583 to 1630, succeeding Joao I and preceding Joao II. He supported Philip II of Spain's claim to the throne of Portugal during the War of the Portuguese Succession of 1580-1583.
Biography[]
Teodosio was born in Villa Vicosa, Portugal in 1568, the son of Joao I, Duke of Braganza. In 1578, he served under King Sebastian of Portugal at the Battle of Alcacer Quibir in Morocco, despite being only ten years old. He was wounded and taken prisoner during the battle, and the King of Morocco let him go without ransom in August 1579, having been impressed by his youth and bravery. Teodosio sided with Philip II of Spain during the War of the Portuguese Succession from 1580 to 1583, and he became Duke of Braganza in 1583. He defended Lisbon from Antonio, Prior of Crato's forces in 1583, fighting for Spain. His son, born in 1604, would become King "Joao IV of Portugal" in 1640.
