Tenochtitlan

Tenochtitlan was a large Aztec city-state in what is now the center of Mexico City, Mexico. It was founded on 20 June 1325, and its name means "among the prickly pears" in Nahuatl. The city was built on an island in Lake Texcoco, which would later be drained by the Spanish as a means of flood control, and its districts were connected by causeways. At its peak, it was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, and it was conquered by the Spanish in 1521 during Hernan Cortes' conquest of the Aztec Empire.
