History[]
Tatarstan was the replacement of Tatar ASSR after the fall of the Soviet Union, and it was declared a republic in the Russian Federation to represent the Sunni Muslim Tatars (specifically the Volga Tatars) of central Russia. The region had been conquered in 1552 from the Kazan Khanate by the Russian Empire, and on 30 August 1990 it was created by the declaration of the state sovereignty of the republic. The republic had a constitution that practiced freedom of religion, as 55% of the population was Sunni and the other half was mostly Orthodox Christian with minorities of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. Tatarstan's capital is Kazan, a major city in eastern European Russia that is called the "Third Capital of Russia" and the "Sports Capital of Russia".
