The Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR that existed from 1920 to 1990, with Kazan serving as its capital. In 1990, the Tatar ASSR proclaimed state sovereignty and became the "Tatar Soviet Socialist Republic". In 1992, the Tatar SSR became the "Republic of Tatarstan" within the Russian Federation.
