Tarchuna

Tarquinii, known as Tarchuna in Etruscan, was a city in Etruria. Now the city of Tarquinia in Lazio, Italy, Tarquinii was one of the oldest cities in Etruria, being founded by Demaratus of Corinth and Greek settlers. His descendants adopted the gens "Tarquinius", and in 509 BC King Lucius Tarquinius Superbus fled to Tarquinii and Veii after the Kingdom of Rome was ousted by the supporters of the new Roman Republic. Tarquinii fought against Rome over the centuries, and in 329 BC it would be conquered by the House of Julii, which made Tarquinii its capital for almost 60 years. Tarquinii later became a bishopric under the Western Roman Empire by 456 AD, and Tarquinii would be renamed "Corneto" in 1250 during the Middle Ages. In 1922, the city was renamed to "Tarquinia" in honor of its history by the government of Fascist Italy, and it came to have a population of 16,630 people in May 2010.
