Tanzim fighters praying

Tanzim was a militant faction of the Palestinian Fatah movement, founded in 1995 by Yasser Arafat with an anti-Islamist goal. Marwan Barghouti was the leader of Tanzim, one of the armed wings of Fatah, and the group drew supporters away from Islamist groups by uniting them in opposition to Israel. While Barghouti personally opposed attacks on civilians, he claimed that he reserved the right to defend himself against the Israelis, and the Tanzim were responsible for several attacks during the Second Intifada of 2000-2005. Many of its members were also members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, although most Tanzim fighters were born after the 1993 Oslo Accords and tended to be young.
