Tanya S. Chutkan

Tanya Sue Chutkan (5 July 1962-) was a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia from 5 June 2014.

Biography[]

Tanya Chutkan was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1962, the daughter of an Indian-Jamaican father and a Black mother. She attended university in the United States and practiced law in Washington DC before being appointed a district court judge in 2014 by President Barack Obama. Chutkan oversaw the trials of several January 6 insurrectionists, the sentencing of Russian spy Maria Butina to 18 months in prison, and the criminal trial of Donald Trump from August 2023.
