The Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) was a socialist political party in Tanganyika that was active from July 1954 to January 1977. The TANU was founded by Julius Nyerere, and the party sought to build and maintain a socialist state aiming towards economic self-suffiency and to eradicate corruption and exploitation, with the peasants and workers taking control over the means of production and exchange. In 1977, the TANU and the Afro-Shirazi Party merged into the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.
