Tanemune Date

Tanemune Date (1488-16 July 1565) was the daimyo of the Date clan. He was overthrown by his own son Harumune Date in 1545 during the Tenbun War after he tried to marry his son Sanemoto Date to a princess of the Uesugi clan.

Biography[]

Tanemune was the son of Hisamune Date, and he became the ruler of Mutsu Province in northern Honshu after the death of his father, decreeing a provincial code (Jinkaishu) during his tenure as daimyo. In 1542, Tanemune alienated his son Harumune Date when he planned to marry the daughter of Uesugi daimyo Sadazane Uesugi to his son Sanemoto Date, and the Tenbun War of 1542-1548 began between Tanemune and his sons. In 1545 he was defeated at the Battle of Iwate Fields, and Harumune replaced him as the head of the Date clan of Mutsu. He died on 16 July 1565.
