Tanacharison (1700-4 October 1754) was a Seneca leader during the French and Indian War, and he helped George Washington in his victory at the Battle of Jumonville Glen.
Biography[]
Tanacharison was born in 1700 near Buffalo, New York to the Catawba tribe, and he was taken captive by France as a child and joined the Seneca. Tanacharison believed that the French had boiled and eaten his father, leaving him with a hatred of the French. Tanacharison became a war chief of the Seneca tribe and supported Great Britain during the French and Indian War, accompanying Colonel George Washington in the initial stages of the war in 1754. He was present at the battle of Jumonville Glen at the start of the war, and he died of pneumonia on 4 October 1754 at Paxtang (present-day Harrisburg, Pennsylvania).
