
Virginia "Tammy" Wynette Pugh (5 May 1942 – 6 April 1998) was an American country music singer-songwriter. Born in Tremont, Mississippi, she became a very successful country musician during the late 1960s and early 1970s, becoming known as the "First Lady of Country Music" for her song "Stand by Your Man" and other songs about loneliness, divorce, and relationship problems; she herself had a troubled marriage to fellow country star George Jones. She opened for the segregationist Democratic Party politician George Wallace throughout his political career, becoming a notable supporter of his. She died in Nashville, Tennessee in 1998 at the age of 55.
