Tall Elk Chief was born circa 1730 in Hunkpapa in the Great Plains to the Sioux tribe, and he became the chief after distinguishing himself in wars against the rival tribes of the region. Tall Elk Chief specialized in diplomacy, forging alliances with the Comanche and Cheyenne tribes against the Pawnee, Sauk, and Crow tribes. Tall Elk Chief also fought against the European empires such as France and Spain as they tried to establish settlements on Sioux lands, with Spain being the main enemy of the Sioux tribe in the late 18th century.
