Takaaki Matsunaga was born in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan in 1969, the son of Takekiyo Matsunaga. Orphaned by Toru Hirose at a young age, he was adopted by Hirose, as was fellow orphan Tsuyoshi Nagumo. He came to be a member of the Hirose-gumi subsidiary of the Yomei Alliance, and he became the owner of the Moreno bar. Despite his stern appearance, he went through life with an easygoing disposition. He was initially hostile towards Kazuma Kiryu for humiliating the Hirose-gumi by beating them up at their Jingai Thunders baseball game in 2016, but he came to respect Kiryu after recognizing him as the "Dragon of Dojima". He and his friends helped Kiryu rescue his grandson Haruto Sawamura, and, while Matsunaga distrusted Kiryu after he theorized that Toru Hirose was the killer protecting the "Secret of Onomichi", he reconciled with Kiryu after Hirose, shot by Heizo Iwami, revealed that he had killed Matsunaga and Nagumo's parents before dying in Nagumo's arms. Kiryu encouraged Matsunaga, whose friendship with Kiryu strengthened, and who accompanied Kiryu to Kabukicho. He, Yuta Usami, and Naoto Tagashira would help rescue Haruka Sawamura during the final battle in Onomichi, allowing Kiryu to defeat Tsuneo Iwami.
