The Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was a Soviet socialist republic that existed from 5 December 1929 to 9 September 1991, with Dushanbe serving as its capital. The republic was created as a national entity for the Tajik people in the USSR, and it succeeded the Tajik ASSR. On 24 August 1990, the Tajik SSR declared sovereignty in its borders, and it was renamed to the "Republic of Tajikistan" on 31 August 1991 before declaring its independence from the USSR on 9 September 1991 during the Dissolution of the Soviet Union.
