Tadeusz Bor-Komorowski (1 June 1895 – 24 August 1966) was Prime Minister of the Polish Republic in Exile from 1947 to 1949, succeeding Tomaz Arciszewski and preceding Tadeusz Tomaszewski.
Biography[]
Tadeusz Bor-Komorowski was born on 1 June 1895 in Khorobriv, Galicia and Lodomeria, Austria-Hungary, and he fought for Austria during World War I. He rose in the ranks of the Polish Army after Poland gained independence from Austria-Hungary, fighting in the Soviet-Polish War and the Invasion of Poland in 1939. After Nazi Germany annexed Poland, Bor-Komorowski led the Home Army in a war of resistance against the Nazis, and he led the Warsaw Uprising. However, the Soviet Union refused to help him because he was from the pro-British Polish resistance and not the pro-Soviet Polish Underground, and the uprising was brutally crushed. He surrendered to the Nazis on the condition that Home Army soldiers were treated as prisoners-of-war and not partisans, and he was liberated at the end of World War II. He served as Prime Minister of the Polish Republic in Exile in England from 1947 to 1949, and he died in London in 1966.
