Tabare Vazquez

Tabare Ramon Vazquez Rosas (17 January 1940-) was President of Uruguay from 1 March 2005 to 1 March 2010 (succeeding Jorge Batlle and preceding Jose Mujica) and from 1 March 2015 to 1 March 2020 (succeeding Mujica and preceding Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou). He was a member of Frente Amplio.

Biography[]

Tabare Ramon Vazquez Rosas was born in Montevideo, Uruguay on 17 January 1940, and he worked as an oncologist; he went on to serve as Mayor of Montevideo from 1990 to 1995. In 1996, he was elected President of Frente Amplio, and he won the 2004 presidential election with 50.45% of the vote. During his first term from 2005 to 2010, and he attempted to create new commercial and cultural links outside the region, including forming controversial relationships with Cuba and Iran. His approval fell from 77% at the start of his tenure to 44% by 2007, but he ultimately had an 80% approval rating in 2010. He went on to return to the presidency from 2015 to 2020.
