Swindon was a small market town until 1848, after which it rapidly grew in size due to the Industrial Revolution; Swindon became known as a railroad town. During World War II, new military industries arrived in Swindon, and the city was rated one of the best places to live in the United Kingdom during the 21st century. By the 2010s, Swindon had 192,599 residents.
