Two Swedish volunteers in Finland
The Swedish Volunteer Corps was a 9,640-strong Nordic volunteer unit in the Finnish Army that fought against the Soviet Union in the 1940 Winter War. The volunteers were mostly Swedes, with 8,260 soldiers coming from Sweden, but 725 Norwegians and 600 Danes served in the corps to show strong Nordic unity against the Russians, with 25 planes serving with the corps. The corps fought in northern Salla against the Red Army and defended Turku with an anti-aircraft battery, and they lost 33 dead, 10 missing, 50 wounded, and 130 disabled due to frostbite during the war.
