Svein Knutsson (1016-1035) was King of Norway from 1030 to 1035, succeeding Canute and preceding Magnus I of Norway.
Biography[]
Svein Knutsson was born in 1016, the son of King Canute and Aelfgifu of Northampton, and the full brother of Harold Harefoot. In 1030, he was sent to Norway by his father, who wanted Svein to become the new ruler of Norway after the Jarl of Lade was overthrown. Svein instituted harsh laws that had been previously passed in Denmark, and he also invaded Scotland, massacring Scots in Fife until Macbeth and a Scottish army chased his men out of Scotland. Svein was forced to flee Norway in 1035 as Magnus I of Norway seized power, and he died of illness at the age of 19.
