Flag of Sutherland

Sutherland is a historic county of northern Scotland, with Dornoch serving as its capital. Originally inhabited by Picts and Gaels, it was later settled by Norse colonists from Norway and Orkneyar and named Suthrland ("southern land") from the standpoint of Orkney and Caithness. Sutherland became home to the warlike Clan Mackay, which continues to be prominent in the region. Much of the population lives in Sutherland's coastal areas, and fishing was the predominant industry for centuries; Sutherland became a poor region during the 21st century. By 2011, Sutherland had a population of 12,650 people.
