Susukino

Susukino is a red-light district in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Named for the eulalia flowering plant, Susukino was founded in 1871 as a red-light district, keeping laborers engaged in pioneering Hokkaido in Sapporo. Susukino thrived with the establishment of licensed prostitution, but the red-light district was transferred before the 50th anniversary of Hokkaido was celebrated in 1918. Many restaurants, cafes, and movie theatres replaced Susukino's brothels. After World War II, the cabaret and dance hall were erected to serve American occupation forces, and several restaurants and bars illegally promoted prostitution. During the 1970s, many disco-style bars were built in Susukino, followed by several hotels during the 1980s. The Sapporo Snow Festival was held in Susukino after 1983, and the neighborhood became known for its ice statues.
