Congress of Soviets

The Supreme Soviet of Russia was the governing body of the Soviet Union from 1938 to 1990 and Russia from 1990 to 1993. The Supreme Soviet held direct elections instead of the indirect elections seen by the Congress of Soviets, the preceding governing body of Russia, and it held sessions in the Kremlin palace of Moscow. The Supreme Soviet survived the fall of the USSR, but not for long. In October 1993, the Supreme Council was abolished by President Boris Yeltsin and replaced with the Federal Assembly of Russia after a bloody constitutional crisis.
