Sumayyah bint Khayyat

Sumayyah bint Khayyat (550-615) was the first Muslim to be martyred, being impaled through the chest by Abu Jahl due to her conversion.

Biography[]

Sumayyah bint Khayyat was born in 550, and she married Yasir ibn Amir. She was a slave in the possession of Abu Hudhaifah ibn al-Mughirah, and Abu Hudhaifah gave her to Yasir as a wife. Along with Muhammad, Abu Bakr, Bilal ibn Rabah, Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, Suhayb ar-Rumi, and her son Ammar ibn Yasir, she was one of the first Muslims, and her family of ex-slaves were persecuted after Abu Hudhaifah's death. The pagan leader Abu Jahl had her tied to the ground and impaled through the chest with a spear after she refused to renounce Muhammad's teachings.
