Sujamal

Sujamal (died 1562) was a Rajkumar of the Kingdom of Amber during the 16th century.

Biography[]

Sujamal was the son of King Puranmal (r. 1527-1534), the nephew of King Bharmal, and the cousin of Harkha Bai (the future Mariam-uz-Zamani). His father was slain at the Battle of Mandrail in 1534, and he lost his birthright when his uncle took the throne and named his own son Bhagwant Das as his heir. Sujamal was close to his cousin during their youths, with Harkha seeing Sujamal as a brother and practicing swordsmanship with him. In 1562, however, Sujamal fled to the Mughal court after Bharmal announced that Bhagwant Das would succeed him, and Sujamal formed an alliance with Emperor Akbar's treacherous brother-in-law Sharifuddin Hussain; Hussain agreed to help Sujamal seize the throne of Amber in exchange for Sujamal's future assistance in his bid to usurp the Mughal throne from Akbar. Sujamal and Sharifuddin allied with Rajkumar Ratan Singh and Rana Udai Singh II, and their combined army marched on Delhi to confront Akbar. However, Sujamal grew disillusioned with Sharifuddin after he overheard Sharifuddin plotting to assassinate Akbar; Sujamal had conditioned his support for Sharifuddin on his takeover being bloodless. Sujamal sent a messenger to warn Akbar of Sharifuddin's plot, but Sharifuddin killed the messenger and threatened to kill Sujamal as well. Sujamal was able to flee from Sharifuddin's tent and ride towards Delhi's walls on a horse, but he was shot in the back by several arrows. He managed to make it to Akbar's tent and warn him of the impending assassination attempt before dying.
