
Stephen Everett Merrill (21 June 1946-5 September 2020) was the Republican Governor of New Hampshire from 7 January 1993 to 9 January 1997, succeeding Ralph D. Hough and preceding Jeanne Shaheen.
Biography[]
Stephen Everett Merrill was born in Norwich, Connecticut in 1946, and he was raised in Hampton, New Hampshire. He served as a US Air Force lawyer and as a private practice lawyer in Manchester before serving as Attorney General of New Hampshire from 1985 to 1989 and as Governor from 1993 to 1997. Merrill renamed "Civil Rights Day" to "Martin Luther King Jr. Day" and was rated the most fiscally responsible governor in America. He died in 2020.
