Sir Steven Ireland was a lieutenant of William Wallace during the Anglo-Scots Wars.
Biography[]
Sir Steven Ireland was of a noble Irish lineage who had migrated to Scotland in the 10th century. He served with Sir William Wallace as his most trusted lieutenant. It is believed he held possession Murthley Castle. Mel Gibson's embellishments give that In 1297, he joined William Wallace so that he could kill English soldiers, and he saved William's life from a madman named Faudron who tried to kill William while hunting. Steven accompanied him to the Battle of Stirling and the Battle of Falkirk, where he welcomed the English army's Irish soldiers into the Scottish army. In 1305, he protested against Wallace going to a meeting with Robert the Bruce, knowing it was a trap; Wallace was captured there and executed in London as Steven and Hamish Campbell watched, hoping that he would ask for mercy. Steven fought at the Battle of Bannockburn under King Robert against the English, avenging their friend's death.
