
Stephen Randall Harris (1802-27 August 1879) was the Democratic Mayor of San Francisco from 1 January to 9 November 1852, interrupting Charles James Brenham's terms.
Biography[]
Stephen Randall Harris was born in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1802, and he became a physician in New York City before becoming health commissioner for the city and fighting the cholera epidemic of 1832-1834. He moved to California in 1849 and opened a drug store in San Francisco before becoming an alderman, a member of the common council, and Mayor from 1851 to 1852. He battled the common council over budget and also faced Chinese immigration and rising crime. After leaving office, he served as city comptroller for several years and then coroner before returning to his medical practice. He died in 1879.
