Stephen II of Bavaria (1319-13 May 1375) was Duke of Bavaria from 1347 to 1349, succeeding Louis IV of Germany; Duke of Lower Bavaria from 1349 to 1353; and Duke of Bavaria-Landshut from 1353 to 1375, preceding John II of Bavaria, Frederick of Bavaria, and Stephen III of Bavaria.
Biography[]
Stephen was the son of the future Emperor Louis IV of Germany and Beatrice of Swabia, and he served as the secular justice of Swabia and Alsace during his father's reign as Emperor. When his father died in 1347, he succeeded him as Duke of Bavaria, and he also became Count of Holland and Hainaut. In 1349, Bavaria was partitioned, and he became Duke of Lower Bavaria; this was partitioned in 1353, and he became Duke of Bavaria-Landshut. Stephen joined Emperor Charles IV of Germany in his 1354 expedition to Italy, and he was not lifted from excommunication until 1362. Upon the death of Meinhard III of Gorizia-Tyrol in 1363, he invaded Tyrol, but he was forced to renounce Tyrol to the Habsburgs in 1369. He died in Bavaria in 1349, and he was succeeded by his three sons.
