Stephen Gaine (born in 1798) was an American captain during the Mexican-American War.
Biography[]
In 1846, Gaine was a captain under the orders of Benton Lacy. An strict officer he was famous for punish Irish and other Catholic soldiers duie to his religious opinions about them. One night, sergeant John Riley and many other soldiers deserted and escaped to Mexico, where they joined forces with the Mexican Army. Gaine informed Lacy about the incident blaming the soldiers and insulting them with racial slurs which caused an angry conversation with colonel Lacy. He was dismissed from the office when Lacy told them that he is also an Irishmen with an US Army uniform.
