
Stephen Clarendon Phillips (4 November 1801-26 June 1857) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-MA 2) from 1 December 1834 to 28 September 1838, succeeding Rufus Choate and preceding Leverett Saltonstall I. Born in Salem, he worked as a merchant before serving in the state house from 1824 to 1829, in the state senate in 1830, in Congress, as Mayor of Salem from 1838 to 1842, and as the Free Soiler nominee for governor in 1848 and 1849.
