Stephanie of Milly (1145-1197) was the wife of Reynald of Chatillon and the Lady of Oultrejourdain from 1168 to 1175, succeeding Philip of Milly and preceding Raynald of Chatillon.
Biography[]
Stephanie of Milly was born in 1145, the younger daughter of the Lord of Nablus, Philip of Milly. In 1163, she married Humphrey III of Toron, and she gave birth to Humphrey IV of Toron. She later remarried to Miles of Plancy when her first husband died in 1173, only for her second husband to be assassinated a year later. In 1175, Stephanie married Raynald of Chatillon, and Raynald became jure uxoris lord of Oultrejourdain as a result of his marriage to Stephanie. In 1183, she negotiated for Saladin and the Ayyubids to spare Stephanie and Raynald's wedding chambers in Kerak when Saladin besieged the city, but she would be widowed in 1187 when her husband broke a peace treaty with Saladin and was killed at the Battle of Hattin. Stephanie then travelled to Western Europe to raise support for a Third Crusade, convincing King Philip Augustus of France and King Richard the Lionheart of England to set out to reconquer Jerusalem. Her son also died before her, and she died in 1197 while accompanying her last husband Hugh III Embriaco of Jebail on his recapture of Jebail from the Saracens.
