Biography[]

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1970, and she became a lawyer in 1996 and became involved with Democratic politics during the 1990s. In 1995, she became the youngest ever member of the City Council at the age of 25. From 2007 to 2010, she served as its President, and she served as Mayor from 2010 to 2016. She was criticized for calling the participants in the 2015 Baltimore protests "thugs", which some critics claimed was a racially-charged term, despite Rawlings-Blake being African-American herself. She opted against running for re-election that same year.
