Steny Hoyer

Steny Hoyer (14 June 1939-) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-MD 5) from 19 May 1981, succeeding Gladys Spellman. From 2003 to 2007 and from 2011, he served as the House Minority Whip.

Biography[]

Steny Hoyer was born in New York City, New York in 1939, and he served on US Senator Daniel Brewster's staff from 1962 to 1966. Hoyer served in the State Senate from 1967 to 1978, serving as President of the Senate from 1975 to 1978. In 1981, he succeeded Gladys Spellman in the US House of Representatives after she fell into a coma, and he became a very senior Democratic Party politician after decades of representing Maryland. From 2003 to 2007 and from 2011, he served as House Minority Whip, making him the second-in-command of the Democratic Party.
