Stentor of Sparta (born 23 July 461 BCE) the Polemarch of the Spartan army in Boeotia during the Peloponnesian War and the son of the great general Nikolaos of Sparta.
Biography
Stentor was born in Sparta in 461 BC, and he was adopted as a child by the Spartan general Nikolaos of Sparta; Nikolaos believed his other children Kassandra and Alexios to have died. Stentor was given a Spartan military upbringing, and he served under his father during the Peloponnesian War. In 431 BC, he commanded the Spartan frontline troops during the Siege of Megaris, during which he met Kassandra in person; he did not believe Kassandra's claim that she was Nikolaos' daughter when she told him. The two worked together to achieve victory over Athens, and Stentor arranged for Kassandra to meet Nikolaos after the battle was done. After Kassandra confronted Nikolaos about his attempted execution of her when she was a child, Nikolaos abandoned his post to "find his honor", and, by 427 BC, Stentor had risen to become Polemarch of the Spartan army in Boeotia during his conquest of the region. Stentor was later recruited as a lieutenant aboard Kassandra's ship Adrestia alongside his father, and the family took part in naval warfare against the Athenians together.
