Stavros Galanou

Stavros Galanou (82 BC-48 BC) was a Ptolemaic Egyptian general who commanded Fort Boubastos in Faiyum during the 1st century BC. He was assassinated by the medjay Bayek during the Battle of Faiyum in 48 BC.

Biography[]

Stavros Galanou was born in Ptolemaic Egypt in 82 BC, and he rose to a high rank in the military of Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII before being appointed commander of Fort Boubastos in Faiyum. Like the Nomarch Berenike the Crocodile, Stavros was known for his corruption and ruthlessness, extorting grain from Egyptian farmers and maintaining a heavy military presence in the towns and villages. In 48 BC, following Berenike's assassination and the murder of Captain Andronikos Miskilis by the medjay Bayek, the people of Faiyum allied with Uer-mu Ah's rebel force and rebelled against the Boubastos garrison. While the farmers staged a protest to lure away a portion of the garrison, Bayek and the rebels assaulted the fort. Most of the rebels were killed in the process, but Bayek was able to assassinate the fort's officers before approaching Stavros from behind and stabbing him in the head, ending his life and his corrupt rule.
