Stanley Chapman (1882-1919) was a British CPGB member who was in charge of handling the party's finances. In 1919, Freddie Thorne delivered him 200 pounds given to him by an attache at the Soviet embassy at a Chinese restaurant; Chapman then delivered the money to the CPGB coffers. Thorne's wife Ada Thorne told her brother Tommy Shelby about this, and Shelby - who had a deal with Inspector Chester Campbell to help him fight against the communists - had Ada give Chapman's address to Campbell. Chapman was arrested by Campbell's special policemen, and Campbell ordered Sergeant Anthony Moss to tie him up and whip him until he gave up Thorne's address. As the CPGB instructed members to never give their addresses lest they be questioned, Chapman was incessantly whipped for knowledge that he did not have, and he had a seizure and died. Campbell had Moss throw him down a staircase and call the coroner Grayson, saying that he had died after falling down some stairs; he told Moss to mention Grayson's mistress in Salteley if Grayson asked any questions.
