Stanisław Lanckoroński (hetman)

Stanisław Lanckoroński (1597-1657) was a Polish-Lithuanian magnate who served as Field Hetman of the Crown from 1654 to 1657, Voivode of Ruthenia from 1651 to 1656, and Voivode of Braclaw from 1649 to 1651.

Biography[]

Stanisław Lanckoroński was born in 1597, and he studied at Leiden and Orleans before serving as a deputy to the Sejm during the 1630s-1650s. He served under Stanislaw Koniecpolski during his battles with the Tatars and Swedes, and he defended Kamieniec Podolski against the Cossacks during the Khmelnytsky Uprising. In 1649, he defended Zbarazh against the Cossacks, and he later fought at the 1651 Battle of Berestechko and the 1655 Battle of Ochmatow. He was defeated at the Battle of Wojnicz, after which he recognized King Charles X Gustav of Sweden as King of Poland. In December 1655, he returned to King John II Casimir Vasa and fought against the Swedes for three days before Warsaw and at the 1657 Battle of Chojnice. He died in Ruthenia in 1657.
